I heard this from one of my mentors…

“You can be losing so slowly you think you are winning."

I don’t know about you but those words hit me hard the first time I heard them.

Let me give you a few examples in my life of how this statement rings true for me and perhaps you can relate.

  • I was so focused on driving revenue that my expenses got way out of whack.

  • When I hired new salespeople, I placed all my energy into them and ignored my most important key players.

  • As the business grew, it created more demands on my time and took me away from my family.

  • I got comfortable only to realize that good is the enemy of great.

On one side of the equation, I found myself winning but on the other side of the equation, I was slowly losing and I didn’t even know it was happening.

In my first example, it’s pretty easy to see holes that are created when all you do is focus on revenue.

We think that driving revenue is the answer but the truth is that profit is made on expense management.

It’s really hard to make a profit when your expenses are eating you alive. You need to treat each of them equally.

My second example was less obvious. We were growing and I was putting a lot of time and money into new hires but on the flip side, my most experienced team members felt like I wasn’t present for them any longer and it hurt the relationship.

Relationships need to be nurtured often.

The third example almost imploded my family. I was so focused on the business I didn’t see how it was hurting those that I cared about the most. I was winning at the game of business but losing at the game of life.

In my final example, I realized that being comfortable leads to mediocrity which leads to a slow death.

You need to constantly be pushing, growing, and innovating to thrive in the world of business.

So the question becomes, how do you constantly keep your pedal on the throttle without hitting the wall? How do you push on one side without damaging the other?

It’s about WHO not HOW, let me explain…

Business consultant and coach, Dan Sullivan wrote a book called “Who Not How” and when I finished it, I remember reflecting that it was one of the best books I had read in the last decade.

As real estate entrepreneurs, we have a high capacity for getting shit done.

We are good at what we do so we take on more tasks, more responsibility, more things.

As we take on more things we become less efficient.

We confuse being busy with being productive.

As I reflected on the things that "I thought I was winning " in the micro but in reality was slowly losing in the macro, I realized that they all had one thing in common—ME!

I was the problem.

I was juggling too many balls moving some areas forward while others were moving backward.

I realized I needed the right “Who’s” in my life to help me plug the holes all around me.

I learned that if there was an area in the business or in my life where I was experiencing stress, it could be solved by finding the right “Who”.

So I stopped asking myself the question, “How am I going to do this?” and instead started asking “Who can help me do this?”

That simple question is so powerful.

It opened my mind to all the possibilities available.

It allowed me to get creative and find solutions and people to help move things forward.

Think about the areas in your life where you know you are slowly losing.

Who can help you pick up the ball?

Maybe it’s a coach, a nutritionist, a mentor, a therapist, an assistant, a friend, or a family member.

There are people all around you who can help you reach your goals —all you have to do is ask.

Here is another huge benefit to asking the question “Who can help me do this?”

It helps reduce stress and anxiety.

Why?

I believe that stress and anxiety manifest because we know we need to take action on something that is “undone”.

Finding the right “who” will help you take action on all the “Undone” things in your life.

At least it has for me.

My GRID team and I are headed to BPCon this coming week.

WE ARE SO EXCITED!!!! 🙌

It’s a big occasion because it’s the first time we have all gone to a conference together and the first time we are going to be exhibitors!

So if you are going, please come up and say hi, I would love to meet you.

P.S.: I will do my best to take notes and send you my biggest “a-has” from the conference.

Stay tuned…

Rob

P.S.: I am looking for real estate agent-investors who want to build their network, grow their influence + deal flow, and help others build wealth. If that's you, respond to this email and I'll let you know more about the opportunity.
